10 life-changing ways to use q-tips

Q-tips just scream “useful,” but for what, exactly? Here’s 10 life-chaning ways to use the cotton swabs for things other than to clean out your ears:

1. Spray the ends of a few cotton swabs with your favorite perfume, and put them in a plastic sandwich bag for touchups throughout the day.

I’ll admit — even I carry a full perfume bottle (although mini sized) in my purse. It takes up so much room though, which could be saved for other things! Putting perfume on cotton swabs not only saves room, but allows you to switch up your daily perfume so much easier. Rather than stashing a handful of different, mini perfume bottles, all you need is a baggy!

2. Outline your lips with translucent powder using a q-tip to prevent your bold lip color from bleeding outside of your lip line.

Nobody likes a messy lip line! Dipping the cotton in translucent powder and sweeping it around the perimeter of your mouth keeps the line between your lips and face precise. The powder actually creates a barrier around your lips and prevents the color from bleeding.

3. Touch up your roots with a q-tip dipped in eyeshadow.

Need a quick root coverup? Swipe a cotton swab over an eyeshadow that matches your hair color, and run it over your roots to camouflage any regrowth!

4. Clean the lint out of your hair dryer vent with a cotton swab.

You know that pesky little grate on the back of your hairdryer? Keeping it clean will ensure that your hair dryer is working at its full capacity 100% of the time. Clean it out with a cotton swab to remove and lint that may be blocking the back of your dryer.

5. Use a q-tip to buff out the self-tanner in spots that are prone to darken .

If you’re a self-tanner, you may have noticed that areas like your knees, knuckles and the back of your ankles soak up a little more lotion than they need to, making you a little too dark. To fix that problem, just wipe away any excess product before it has a chance to set in using a clean cotton swab!

6. Fix a stuck zipper by rubbing shampoo on the area with a q-tip

Dip one end of the cotton in a little bit of shampoo, and rub the end along the zipper where it is stuck. The shampoo works as a lubricant and loosens the jammed zipper!

7. Easily get rid of a pimple with two q-tips and hot water

For a pimple that has come to a head — take a hot shower, and while your skin’s pours are extra open, use two cotton swabs to gently press them against the zit towards each other. Don’t force it though! It will come out when it’s ready.

8. Dip two q-tips in eye cream, freeze them, and use them under your eyes in the morning to help deflate puffy under-eye bags.

First, make sure your eye cream contains caffeine, which will help tighten your skin, and cucumber, which will help calm puffiness. Then, dip the ends of the q-tips into the cream and stick them in a sandwich bag and in the freezer for the night. In the morning, you’ll be able to use them under your eyes to reduce any puffiness! Starting from the inner corners or your eyes, apply pressure going outwards as you slowly glide the cotton swabs toward your ears.

9. Dip the ends of a few q-tips in your favorite eyeshadows to save room while packing.

If you’re going on a short trip and don’t have much baggage room, roll the ends in the cotton in a few different eyeshadow shades. They’ll be covered in the product and will create the most perfect mini eyeshadow applicators!

10. Use a q-tip to define your contouring lines.

To really determine where you should be defining your cheekbones with bronzer, line up a cotton swab right below the bone. Then, just trace the lines of the q-tip and blend the bronzer! Voila!

Makeup MAYhem Day 9 — Pretty Professional: Beauty for the Workplace

Makeup MAYham has resumed, now that Ipsy sneak peaks are officially over!

We’re always hearing to dress for the job you want, not the job you have — but about your makeup? A nice dress and blazer isn’t nearly put together unless your beauty routine agrees. But … while it is important to make sure your makeup completes the look, it’s just as important to not over primp. You don’t want your co-workers thinking you spend more time in front of the mirror than you do in front of the computer at your desk.

Balance is key — here’s what you should keep in mind about beauty for the workplace:

We all have those days when the alarm doesn’t go off, or we just need an extra 15 minutes to lay in bed. On days that you don’t have time to style (or wash!) your hair, the ballerina bun should be your best friend. It’s a sleek and stylish look, but doesn’t take much effort at all! Also, always be sure to dry your hair on mornings that you do wash it — wet hair says that you were probably rushing out the door that morning … which is a sign of bad time management.

While your nails aren’t the single, most important facet of your beauty routine, badly chipped nails could come off as a sign of sloppiness. Spend just a few extra minutes either removing the polish entirely, or if you’re really in a time crunch, slap on a top coat that you can perfect later.

You’re going to work, not to the night club. Keep your eye makeup simple with a swipe of liner and a neutral or subtle shadow on your lid — if you’re the kind of person who stares at a computer screen all day, you may want to take a few wipes and your liner with you, just in case things get messy from straining your eyes.

With lipstick, you can be a little more bold. In fact, a nice lip is the trick for making yourself look instantly put together. As long as the rest of your makeup is simple, a bold lip could look nice. Keeping it simple with a gloss or balm is also fine too.

When it comes to perfume, be sensitive to your coworkers. Spray conservatively and remember — just because you can’t smell it, doesn’t mean others can’t. The more you wear your favorite perfume, the less you’re going to be able to pick up the scent. And remember: if you’re in need of a little midday spritz, do it in the bathroom, not at your desk.

It’s a nice idea to keep your few beauty essentials in a small pouch on hand, either in your desk or in your purse. You don’t need your whole routine, but some lipstick, oil blotting wipes, mascara and deodorant could come in pretty handy. A hard working girl could always use a touchup!

What does your daily office beauty look like? What do you like to keep in your on-the-go makeup bag?

Ipsy May 2014 Sneak Peak #6: The Bag

Ipsy is going to make some people very happy this month, myself included! This month’s products are the perfect way to kick off the summer (see sneak peak #1, #2 #3#4 and #5 in previous posts) and the bag is just PERFECT. First of all, it’s at least looks to be canvas…not plastic. Finally a bag that won’t make everything smell like plastic! And second of all, look how cute!  Glam Rooms are released on Monday and I can’t wait to find out what I’ll be getting this month!

Don’t forget to check back early next week — I’ll be posting a giveaway! And Makeup MAYhem resumes tomorrow!

Ipsy May 2014 Sneak Peak #5

Ipsy just keeps getting better and better,

La Fresh Beauty Wipes in oil free makeup wipes and facial cleansing wipes are both amazing products, and are so soft on the skin! They are both made with aloe vera, cucumber, chamomile, marshmallow & tea plant extracts, and are oil free. I’m always up for makeup wipes, especially when they’re travel size so that I can take them with me.

The Avene Eau Thermale doesn’t seem to be sold on the Avene website anymore, but I found it available on amazon, and the reviews are so-so. I’m not too sure what it is, but it looks like some sort of hydrating spray for your face. Regardless, I’m interested!

The Derma e microdermabrasion scrub also looks pretty interesting, especially for skin that needs a new start! It seems to be your average scrub that buffs skin and diminishes fine lines, wrinkles and acne scars — that’s a plus!

I can’t tell what the last scrub is, but I’m hoping times a million that it’s a lip scrub and that if it is, I get it! I’ve been looking for any lip scrub for a really long time.

Although we got brushes last month, you can never have too many, and although I LOVE my Covergirl eyelash curler, this one looks super cute and it would be nice to have a spare!

Don’t forget to check out sneak peaks #1 here , #2 here, #3 here and #4 here. And stay on the lookout for the bag preview — I’m so excited and anxious to see what it will look like. I’m hoping super springy and cute!

Also, Makeup MAYhem will resume tomorrow, and I’ll be posting a giveaway soon so check back often!

Ipsy May 2014 Sneak Peak #4

After waiting a few extra hours, Ipsy sneak peak #4 is up! They usually go up around 11 a.m., but today we were on our toes until 3 p.m. when it was finally released! Was it worth the wait? Absolutely!

Yes! Radishes, tomatoes and carrots! Ha…just kidding.

This sneak peak actually features some great hair products — finally, Ipsy!

Pur-Lisse seems to be a French and Chinese product (the name comes from the French “pur,” or pure and “lisse” or smooth), and testifies to transforming the skin without compromise. I’ve never heard of anything like it before, so I’m interested to try it!

The Eva NYC Rock-a-Wave curl cream is a great product for anyone with wavy or curly hair! it’s a great product to renew your hair’s vitality by nourishing and strengthening the hair cuticle. Just from looking online, it results in a great, textured curl and wave!

Another Eva NYC product, mane tamer leave in cream I’ve seen in Urban Outfitters, and I’ve always wanted to try it! It’a a normal leave in cream that tames frizz and annoying fly-aways, but has added argan oil that nourishes, strengthens, revitalizes  and hydrates hair for a touchable, silky and soft feel. Come on Ipsy — I’m counting on you!

The Eva NYC therapy hair mask I’ve also seen, but at Ulta! The full size is $12.99, so I’d be happy to try it before I commit to a full size, but I’m always super eager to try hair masks! Again, it deeply conditions, repairs and strengthens hair, and is especially great on damaged hair. I’m hoping for softer, more manageable hair, so I’m excited for today’s sneak peaks!

If the last one is what I think it is, then it’s probably the Eva NYC Up all Night Volumizing Spray. My hair is already so big and poofy that I’m not dying for this one, but I can’t complain!

Don’t forget to check out Sneak Peak #1, #2 and #3! And watch for tomorrow’s final sneak peak for the month!

Ipsy May 2014 Sneak Peak #3

I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited for an Ipsy bag as I am for this month. If not for the products inside, then at least for the theme and the design — I can’t wait to see what the bag itself looks like! Sneak peaks resumed today after breaking for the weekend, and with much delight! There are SO many good products in today’s sneak peak that if I could just get everything in this photo and nothing else, I’d be happy!

I have just about every color in The Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm collection, and they are my absolute g0-to lip product when I’m searching for just the perfect color. They are part of a new collection rich in moisture and full in color. They’re an all around great product that is an absolute essential!

I’ve never been upset by anything Too Faced, and I’m so excited to see the Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer as an option for this month! It sounds delicious, and I’m sure it looks just as yummy. It even smells like chocolate! Other items in this Sneak Peak include:

I really can’t believe all of the great products this month, and I hope to see more just like it! If you missed sneak peak #1  and sneak peak #2 here if you missed them!
